Single Malt Whisky in Demand

We have seen demand and consequently prices at auction rise from both Collectors and Connoisseurs as supply of Rare Malts reduces. The Distilleries had a resurgence of fortunes with the advent of the Whisky Trail and tourism in Scotland back in the 1980’s and 1990’s which lead them to produce a wide variety of limited edition bottlings. Whilst many were consumed, those that remain are still very much sought after. With the benefit of technology, online stores list many thousands of bottles including many that are out of stock. When these rarities come up at auction, they have potential to delight the seller or provide a speculative investment..

Over recent years, demand for Whisky in general from Asia and in particular China has seen the production of Whisky increase with the long closed Distilleries recently being reopened. However unlike Gin, Whisky is aged in barrels for a number of years. It can be observed that many Single Malts “on the High Street” no longer state the number of years of aging. We understand that many Connoisseurs much prefer the longer aged, less rushed earlier bottlings using only the best grain varieties. Hence we have noted the prices for good Whisky bottled in the 1990’s and earlier rise many fold!
